Wood Care Routine
Where do you source the flannel for the Vermont Oiling Cloth?
We work with the Vermont Flannel Co. to recycle unused pieces of flannel fabric to hand-sew our Vermont Oiling Cloths. Their 100% cotton flannels are yarn-dyed for lasting color and tightly woven to minimize shrinkage, ensuring these cloths will last. And as in our bowl and board production process, we love finding ways to reduce material waste!
How should I maintain and clean my wooden bowls and boards?
Hand-wash using warm, soapy water and dry promptly with a soft towel. When the wood appears dry or dull, apply a small amount our Refined Walnut Wood Oil. Let it soak in for a few minutes, wipe off the surplus, and let it dry for at least six hours to maintain your woodenware for years to come.
Is soap safe to use on wooden boards and bowls?
Absolutely. It is safe to use a small amount of mild dish soap and warm water. Wash the items gently, rinse them, and dry them immediately. Avoid soaking them in the sink, as extended water exposure can lead to swelling and cracking.
Why should I avoid putting wooden boards and bowls in the dishwasher?
Dishwashers use high-pressure water and extreme heat that strip away the wood's protective oils. This can cause the wood to warp, swell, and crack. Hand-washing is essential to protect your items and keep them in heirloom condition.
Which oil is best to protect my wooden bowl or board?
We suggest using our Refined Walnut Wood Oil. It is a premium, food-safe, non-toxic finish created for high-quality woodenware. Our oil is heat-treated to be shelf-stable, preventing it from turning rancid like regular vegetable oils. It absorbs deeply into hardwood fibers, creating a protective, lustrous finish that guards against stains, odors, and moisture.
How frequently do I need to oil my woodenware?
You should apply oil whenever the wood feels dry or appears dull. For items used regularly, this usually means about once a month. Regular applications of our Refined Walnut Wood Oil will keep the wood nourished and looking its best for service.
