Cleaning and Care Instructions - How to Clean a Wooden Bowl and a Wood Cutting Board

With proper cleaning and care, your finely crafted Andrew Pearce wood product will last a lifetime—and beyond.

DO:

  • Oil your product after the very first wash.
  • Hand wash with warm soapy water after use.
  • Immediately after washing hand dry with a clean cloth.
  • To help maintain its natural wood beauty and integrity, recondition your wood product with Andrew Pearce Refined Walnut Wood Oil at least every 6 months or if the wood begins to look dull or feel rough to the touch.
  • Even if your Andrew Pearce product is used infrequently, the air will naturally dry out the wood over time. Make sure to recondition your products to prevent cracking.
  • Dryer winter air may dry out wood products more quickly. We recommend reconditioning our products more frequently than you usually would during these months.
  • Apply our wood oil one or two tablespoons at a time, and work into the wood with a soft clean cloth. Make sure to get both the inside, outside, and edges of the bowl. Add more oil slowly as you go until desired shine is reached.
  • Keep the newly oiled bowl or board from coming into contact with fabric for 24 hours after oiling, as the oil may transfer.
  • BOARD CARE: After hand washing, allow your board to air dry overnight (or 12 hours) in a drying rack so air can reach both sides of the board. This will prevent warping and mold from growing. Do not store damp boards directly on a countertop or in a cupboard.

DO NOT:

  • Put wooden products in the dishwasher, microwave, or oven
  • Leave wooden products in standing water or filled with water
  • Let wood completely dry out, without being oiled for months at a time
  • Use vegetable or olive oils to recondition your wood product; they contain ingredients that may create a culture for bacteria to grow
  • Use mineral oil or waxes on our products as they are not absorbed into the wood; unlike our refined walnut oil
  • Store damp boards directly on a countertop or in cupboard
  • Leave fruits or vegetables to rot in the bottom of your bowl as this could cause discoloration or staining of the wood
  • Freshly cut strawberries and beets will likely stain new cherry wood bowls and cutting boards. We recommend waiting for your cherry items to age for at least a year before allowing strawberries and beets to make contact.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIMON PEARCE GLASS:

"Our lead-free glassware is dishwasher safe, although hand washing is recommended. Avoid cleaners that contain citrus, as it may damage the glass and potentially cause cloudiness. Extreme changes in temperature may cause our glass to crack. We suggest you not use glass in the microwave or place in the refrigerator or freezer to chill. Boiling hot liquids should never be poured into any handled glass. When pouring hot liquids into any other glass, place a metal spoon in the container before pouring." (Taken from simonpearce.com).
