Heavy-Duty Craft, Lightweight Environmental Impact: Our Thick Board Values

Each of our cutting and presentation boards begins with timber responsibly sourced from managed forests across the Northeast. Our workshop operates a low-waste coring process to cut boards and bowls from each log with the least waste possible, honoring both the tree and the landscape it came from.

We finish our boards exclusively with our allergen-free, food-safe Refined Walnut Wood Oil. There are no synthetic lacquers or industrial chemicals in our production process.

A cutting board from Andrew Pearce is a lasting investment. Through our Tree for a Tree program, each purchase contributes to the reforestation of the regional forests that supply our raw materials.

Cutting Board Care & Maintenance

How do I clean and maintain my wood cutting board?
Hand-wash with warm, soapy water and dry immediately with a soft cloth. Store your board on its edge or in a rack to allow for even airflow on both sides. When the wood begins to look dull or feel dry, apply a light coat of our Refined Walnut Wood Oil, let it penetrate for a few minutes, then buff away the excess and allow to dry for at least six hours before use.
Can I use soap to wash a wood cutting board?
Yes. A small amount of mild dish soap and warm water is perfectly safe. Wash gently, rinse quickly, and dry right away. Never leave your board soaking in the sink or resting on a wet surface, as prolonged exposure to water can cause the wood to swell and crack over time.
Why can't wood cutting boards go in the dishwasher?
The extreme heat and high-pressure water of a dishwasher will strip the wood of its protective oils, causing the fibers to swell, warp, and eventually crack. Hand-washing is the only way to protect your board and ensure it remains an heirloom for a lifetime.
What is the best oil for conditioning a wood cutting board?
We recommend our Refined Walnut Wood Oil, a premium, non-toxic, food-safe finish made specifically for fine woodenware. Unlike standard vegetable oils, which can turn rancid, our oil is heat-treated to be shelf-stable. It penetrates deep into the hardwood fibers, leaving a beautiful, lasting luster that protects against moisture, odors, and stains
How often should I oil my wood cutting board?
For cutting boards in daily use, we recommend oiling about once a month. A good rule of thumb: when the surface begins to look dull or feel dry to the touch, it is time for a fresh coat of our Refined Walnut Wood Oil. This simple maintenance ritual keeps the wood protected, vibrant, and ready for years of use.
Cutting Board Care & Maintenance

Can a wood cutting board be used as a serving board?

Absolutely. Our hardwood boards move seamlessly from the kitchen to the table. Their natural beauty makes them an elegant surface for presenting artisanal charcuterie, cheese, or fresh bread. Finished with our food-safe Refined Walnut Wood Oil, they are as welcoming on a dinner table as they are practical on a countertop.

Can Andrew Pearce cutting boards be personalized?

Yes. Many of our hardwood boards can be personalized with precision custom engraving. Whether it is a family name, a significant wedding date, or a company logo, we would love to personalize your piece, transforming it into a cherished family legacy or a sophisticated gift.

How do I store my cutting board to prevent warping?

Store your cutting board on its edge or in a rack to allow for even airflow on both sides. Never leave your board resting in standing water or on wet surfaces for extended periods, as prolonged moisture exposure can cause the wood to swell and warp over time.

How do I restore the luster to a dull cutting board?

Apply a light coat of our Refined Walnut Wood Oil to the surface of your board. Allow the oil to penetrate the fibers for a few minutes, then buff away the excess with a soft cloth and let dry for at least six hours before use. This simple ritual seals the wood, prevents graying, and keeps the grain vibrant and resistant to food odors and stains.

Can I use mineral oil instead of walnut oil on my cutting board?

While mineral oil is a common petroleum-based finish, we recommend our Refined Walnut Wood Oil as a superior, plant-based alternative. Our oil actually cures hard as it dries, providing a more durable and naturally beautiful finish that protects your board for years to come.

What kinds of wood are used for Andrew Pearce cutting boards?

We primarily work with black walnut and cherry hardwoods, with select pieces in maple. All of our timber is regionally sourced and sustainably harvested from managed forests. Black Walnut is prized for its dark, sophisticated chocolate tones and dramatic grain. Cherry is loved for its warm red or tan hue that matures into a rich, deep reddish-brown over time. Both stand up beautifully to daily use.

Are Andrew Pearce cutting boards food-safe?

Absolutely. Every cutting board we craft is finished with our non-toxic, allergen-free Refined Walnut Wood Oil. This food-safe finish penetrates the hardwood fibers to create a resilient barrier against moisture and bacteria, while enlivening the naturally beautiful grain. Our boards are designed for the rigors of the daily kitchen.
